May 15th, 2022 11:00 am: Donkey Release Event Donkey Release Location: 600 Teller County Road 89, Cripple Creek, CO 80813 Celebrate the release of the resident Cripple Creek Wild Donkey Herd from their winter grazing grounds into the city. This is an annual event and the donkeys are very excited to leave their pasture for the greener grasses throughout the community. The release takes place annually on May 15th at 11:00 a.m. This year the Gold Camp Victorian Society is providing a living history reenactment of Teddy Roosevelt, during the release. President Roosevelt was instrumental in improving the working conditions for the donkeys in the mining industry. Some of the Cripple Creek donkeys are descendants of the donkeys that worked in the mining industry. Two new donkeys are joining the herd: Calypso and Salsa. They were recently adopted and will join the rest of the herd as they wander the streets of Cripple Creek this summer. The donkeys will return to their winter grazing in November.
