Lorne said she had been working at the same building for 30 years but recently there has been an uptick in security issues partially due to the rising homeless population.

An attacker in New Orleans discovered he’d committed an error in the victim selection process when he tried to force his way into a car driven by a woman with her toddler in the back seat. Instead of robbing or carjacking her, the thug fled empty-handed as the woman, a long-time Air Force veteran, pulled a gun, ready to provide some ballistic dissuasion.

Republican Governor Kay Ivey on Thursday signed House Bill 272, making Alabama the 22nd state to pass so-called "constitutional carry" legislation. Proponents of the GOP-backed bill say it defends the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding gun owners. However, both advocacy groups and law enforcement associations argue it knocks down important guardrails and will add to the state's already high rate of gun violence.

Authorities said early Thursday morning a resident in the area reported that a man broke through the back door of one of the red-tagged homes. The homeowner confronted the would-be burglar and chased him off. "I grabbed my pellet gun," homeowner Judy said, and she yelled "you get the hell out of my house right now!" The suspect got scared and ran out the door. Officers responded to the scene around 8:30 a.m. but the suspect was already gone.
